Benghazi, 23 June 2014:
Four hostages held by Ansar Al-Sharia in Gunfuda have escaped after giving their . . .[restrict]guards the slip during an air raid.
Head of Saiqa Special Forces Investigations Unit Fadel Al-Hassi told the Libya Herald that two Saiqa members from the brigade’s 21 Battalion and two civilians had escaped. He named one of the Special Forces members as Salah Al-Briki saying the other escapees did not want their identities known.
Hassi said the four men had been moved between three different prisons since the beginning of Operation Dignity. They had previously been held at the former home of Qaddafi ‘sDefence Minister Abu Bakr Younis Jabr before their captors were forced to relocate because of air attacks there. Hassi said they finally escaped from an Ansar Al-Sharia base, near a dump in Gunfuda, during another air raid which had distracted their guards.
While the four men have returned home to their families, Hassi said that interviews with them had revealed that one of their number had been left behind. The fifth man was too badly injured to make an escape attempt after he had reportedly been shot in the leg.
