There were 589 human rights violations in Libya during 2024, NGO Libya Crimes Watch (LCW) revealed in its 2024 Annual report released yesterday.
These included arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, torture in prisons and detention centers, extrajudicial killings, and restrictions on freedom of opinion, expression, assembly, civil society, and journalists.
LCW said it documented in its 2024 Annual report deadly attacks against human rights defenders, activists, civil society and journalists, as well as widespread violations against asylum-seekers and refugees.
The report highlighted the involvement of the authorities, armed groups, security agencies and individuals in committing grave and systematic violations against civilians in eastern and western Libya, noting the continued spread of impunity due to the lack of accountability.
The report was based on 62 files, based on live testimonies of victims, survivors and witnesses, collected by the Field Monitoring and Documentation Team during the year.
The report covers 24 cities in eastern, southern and western Libya, including remote and inaccessible areas due to the complex security situation.
