Al-Asabaa Municipality reported yesterday that EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism team of experts had explained in a meeting yesterday that, using the latest equipment, devices and methods used to detect the causes of fires, and that using these measurements and others, have led to the preliminary conclusion that excludes gases, chemicals and physical causes of the fires.
The Municipality reported that the EU team of experts had reassured the people of the city that these fires are not due to the spread of gases, environmental pollution or dangerous biological materials, according to the results that the team will present in its full and official report to the Municipality in the coming days.
Al-Asabaa Municipality had reported last Monday (7 April) that the EU team of experts had arrived in the city last Sunday (6 April).
The Tripoli based Libyan government reported yesterday that the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism team of experts continues to carry out its field missions in the city of Al-Asabaa, investigating the causes of the recent mysterious fires that swept the region.
Al-Asabaa is located about 113 km south of Tripoli in the Nefusa/Western Mountains and had experienced over 100 unexplained house fires that swept the region over the last two months.
The EU had reported previously that, in response to Libya’s request for assistance, its team of experts from Finland, Estonia and Malta are offering support – both remotely and on the ground – in resolving the cause of a series of house fires in Al-Asabaa.
The Libyan government said the EU team is working in coordination with the (Libyan) National Centre for Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management and the Municipality of Al-Asabaa. They will, the government added, conduct field inspections to assess environmental and human damage, and identify the technical causes of the fires.
This cooperation, the Libyan government further added, aims to enhance rapid response capabilities locally, and provide technical and technical support in the fields of prevention and firefighting, reflecting the commitment to developing crisis management mechanisms, and openness to international partnerships in the face of any natural disasters.
