Libyan Revolutionaries Operations Room calls on revolutionaries to desert army

Tripoli, 21 May 2014:

The Libyan Revolutionaries Operations Room (LROR) has called on “true revolutionaries” serving in the armed . . .[restrict]forces to “temporarily” quit.

In a statement made yesterday, the LROR also told them to obtain from their commanders the names of any “terrorists” whom the army has accused of taking action against it, such as assassinations, together with the names of the militias to which they belong.  It further called on the Attorney General to publish the results of investigations into such crimes where there was “substantial evidence” available.

The LROR said it would be “the head of the spear”  dealing with any crimes such as assassinations and killing. The country did not need General Khalifa Hafter to do so. It said it viewed the current military operations as “a coup” aimed at re-imposing dictatorship and undermining the 17 February revolution.

The LROR said, however, that it would not participate in any civil war nor in the shedding of Libyan blood. No group or individual, it stated, l could expect to win such a conflict; in the event of a war in Libya there could be only losers.

The statement is seen as a move by LROR to claim it is thoroughly capable of dealing with assassinations and killings, providing there is proof, but also as support for the 17 February Brigade and the Libya Shield forces in Benghazi which have been attacked by General Khalifa Hafter.

He is now being backed by a growing number of national army units. [/restrict]
