Tripoli, 15 March 2015:
At least four people are dead and five have been seriously wounded in communal violence . . .[restrict]in Kufra.
A young Tebu couple were shot by Zwai members last night in an apparently unprovoked shooting. The wife died while her husband was seriously injured. There was an almost immediate reprisal killing of a Zwai by Tebu gunmen. A Sudanese was also killed in the crossfire. Late last night another Zwai was found dead at on the Airport Road.
The new inter-communal violence brought about more urgent meetings between Tebu and Zwai elders in Kufra who were last in action a week ago after a Zwai was gunned down at a petrol station.
There a reports that a Zwai suspect in last night’s shooting of the couple, has been arrested by police. The town remained tense today with fears of more violence.
Clashes between the two communities began in 1974 but the deadliest violence, in which hundreds died, was in 2012 when Tebu fighters forced Libya Shield brigades to withdraw from Kufra. The town has a population of some 60,000, of whom the majority is Arab Zwai. The Tebu community is around 5,000 strong. [/restrict]
