Tripoli, 15 May 2014:

Masked gunmen hijacked the vehicle of a Constitutional Assembly candidate this morning in Derna.

“This morning . . .[restrict]the activist, college graduate and nominee for the constitutional assembly, Hana Ibrayik Al-Fakhri, was forced from her car by unknown assailants,” an official in Derna told the Libya Herald.  He added that she was prevented from removing any of her personal possessions from the car.  Fakhri was unharmed in the attack.

The Derna area has still to elect members to the Assembly.  Elections there were stopped on 20 February when militants attacked polling stations.

Speaking by phone to the Libya Herald the official also mentioned that a Derna resident was found dead on the outskirts of town yesterday.  “There are rumours that the victim had recently joined the police department,” he said, “but I cannot confirm them.”

Asked about reports of three Libyans and an Algerian being killed or injured in Derna in the last 24 hours he stated: “I really don’t know anything about that.  I will only comment on the events for which I have clear information.  However, there are negative events taking place every day.  The security situation in Derna is very fragile right now.” [/restrict]
