Tripoli, 3 February 2014:
Sebha Airport is set to reopen once notice is given by the Military Governor for the . . .[restrict]South that it and the surrounding area have been fully secured.
The airport’s General Manager, Mohammed Owheda, told the Libya Herald that although an area 20 kilometres around the airport was now secure, normal operations would resume only once a formal statement was issued that all fighting in the area had ceased.
Owheda said that the airport had been on the frontline of the recent clashes in and around the town, with surrounding neighbourhoods the epicentre of the conflict.
The reopening of the airport at Sebha after 20 days of closure is timely. The Libyan Football team is expected to fly into the town in coming days as a part of their African Nations Championship victory tour. [/restrict]
