Tripoli, 20 January 2014:
Workers at the Sarir power station in the south of the country stopped work yesterday, following . . .[restrict]the killing of three Libyan Army soldiers on Saturday and the deteriorating security situation in the area.
The power station, which is 450 kilometres north of Kufra, normally produces some 450 MW, according to GECOL spokesman, Lutfi Ghoma. He added that the closure was already affecting the distribution of power and could cause electricity shortages in both Tripoli and Benghazi.
Head of Sarir power station, Hashim Al-Malki, confirmed to the Libya Herald that, due to the recent attack on army personnel that left three dead, workers at Sarir power station stopped work because they fear for safety.
Malki this morning said he was heading to the Sarir power station to evaluate the situation on ground and see how quickly employees could return to work. He said getting the power station running again was a priority.
Last night, clashes on the road between Zahra and Warshefana affected production at Zawia power station, which is also connected to the South Sebha power station, Ghoma said. [/restrict]
