Tripoli, 9 October 2013:
A member of Derna’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Saad Abdulrazaq Bu Dahab Al-Mansouri, was killed today . . .[restrict]when unidentified gunmen opened fire on his vehicle.
Libyan news agency Press Solidarity reported a security source as saying that Al-Mansouri was shot while he was driving to work.
Whilst en route to Derna to assess the situation, Derna Congressman Abdulfatah Shalwi told the Libya Herald that the town no longer had either a functioning local council or Security Directorate.
Two days ago, air-defence police officer Abdulaziz Mahmoud Iddresi survived an assassination attempt when an explosive device attached to the underside of his car exploded in front of his house. He was not in the vehicle at the time but the blast caused serious damage to his home.
Iddresi, who specialises in radar and wireless, played a prominent role in the revolution, reactivating air-defence systems in the east of the country.
Derna has seen a number of assassinations including, in July, the region’s Commander of the Search and Rescue division of the Libyan Air Force, Colonel Fathi El-Emami, and a retired colonel, Abdullateef Emdawi Al-Dali Almzeni.
More recently, the town was left in shock by the murder of a prominent local Sufi cleric, Sheikh Mustafa Rajab Al-Mahjoubi, who was shot outside his home on 20 September. [/restrict]
