Tripoli, 30 October 2013:
The 26th Arab Basketball is underway in Benghazi, with six teams participating, including two from Libya.
The . . .[restrict]home teams are Al-Ettihad from Tripoli and Al-Ahli from Benghazi. The visiting teams are Ahly from Yemen, Zakhou from Iraq and Ali-Hammamet and Tekbas from Tunisia.
In the opening match, Libya got off to a strong start, with Benghazi’s Al-Ahli beating Yemen’s Ahly 115 -58. Tripoli’s Al-Ettihad then narrowly lost, 66-64, to Zakhou.
There should have been more teams in the event but several withdrew due to the unstable security situation in Benghazi.
“Three other teams sent their apologies for not participating because of security concerns,” head of the Libyan Basketball Federation Abd-alhakeem Matog told the Libya Herald.” He added, however, that the teams which were participating said they felt comfortable being in Libya.
There are five rounds in the tournament, the last of which will be held on Saturday. [/restrict]
