Tripoli, 14 April:
Staff at Tripoli’s Central Hospital left the building today to protest when SSC guards were being . . .[restrict]withdrawn, thus, in the view of medical personnel, leaving the hospital dangerously unprotected.
The SSC responded rapidly last night, Saturday, when an armed group burst into the building and began firing weapons. Police today reported that the gunfire resulted from a confrontation between two families inside the building in which one person was killed.
Two of the gunmen was disarmed and arrested.
The SSC then mounted an overnight guard on the premises in Shara Zawia. However later in the day the unit’s commander announced his men would be withdrawing, triggering the protests by anxious staff.
It was reported this evening the SSC personnel had returned to secure the hospital and that medical practitioners had resumed their work. [/restrict]
