Tripoli 26 January 2013:
Some 26,000 members of the Supreme Security Committee (SSC) have now signed up to join the police force . . .[restrict]according to the Interior Ministry. The figure includes 5,000 who have already started training.
The fibure means that the government’s target had been met. Earlier this month, Interior Minister Ashour Shuwail said that the Ministry would need to enroll between 25,000 to 30,000 members of the SSC into the police.
Applications to transfer from the SSC have been speeding up. At the beginning of the year, when the SSC was originally supposed to have been closed down, only 3,010 SSC members had applied to transfer to the police, the overwhelming majority of them in the east of the country.
According to Interior Ministry spokesman Magdi Al-Arafi full-time police training courses for ex-SSC members have started in Ajdabiya, Jmail, Gharian, Zuara, Emsalata, Ajeelat and Beida. [/restrict]
