Tripoli, 3 November:

The British Embassy in Tripoli has announced that applications are now being accepted for a UK scholarship programme offering . . .[restrict]promising students the chance to study for a Master’s Degree in England.

The Chevening Scholarships are awarded to outstanding scholars with leadership potential. Each of the nine available scholarships is for a one-year Master’s course at one of the UK’s top universities. Libyans of any age, who are resident in Libya and intend to return to the country after their study, may apply.

The Chevening Scholarships are offered for any subject. However, this year the British Embassy is prioritising areas such as public administration, public financial management, politics, governance and democracy. Human rights and gender are also priority subjects, as are leadership, management and project management. Other favoured subjects for applicants will be economics, finance, entrepreneurship, business administration and law.

Applicants will be expected to hold a Bachelor’s Degree and have at least two years’ work experience. They will also need to have a very good level of English. Under the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), students will need to have a proven level of 6.5, or an equivalent Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic) or a TOEFL IBT, to be considered.

According to the British Embassy, to stand a chance of winning one of these prestigious awards: “Applicants should demonstrate clear leadership potential. They should be motivated to use their studies in the UK for the benefit of Libya and be striving to take up a leadership position – in government, business, civil society or other sectors – in Libya within ten years of their scholarship.”

Chevening Scholarships, the UK government’s global scholarship programme, are funded by the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The scheme has been running for nearly 30 years and there are over 41,000 Chevening alumni around the world. Every year some 700 students are chosen and there are currently six Libyans studying on Chevening Scholarships.

Previous scholars include notable politicians such as Sergei Stanishev, the former Prime Minister of Bulgaria and Alvaro Uribe Velez, the former President of Colombia.

Nine scholarships for the academic year 2013-2014 have been designated for Libyans. The closing date for applications is 2 January 2013.
