Tripoli, 18 October:
Protestors in Sebha have called for the local council to be sacked and for elections for a new body . . .[restrict]to take place as soon as possible.
Demonstrating outside the council offices on Wednesday, they demanded an elections committee be formed to organise a poll. They also demanded an interim committee be set up to run the town until the newly-elected council can take over.
The protest was organised by local civil society organization and revolutionaries.
Members of the existing council want to hold elections according to its official spokesman, Abu-Bakr Hamza. The problem, he said, was that there was no help coming from the national authorities to start the process.
He said that the local government ministry had been contacted more than three months ago, asking for financial support to run the election. But so far there had been no response.
