Tripoli, . . .[restrict]7 August:
The local council in Misrata has issued a statement wholeheartedly condemning Saturday’s attack on a compound in the city belonging to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). It described the incident as “disgraceful behaviour, which is not condoned by the Libyan people, nor by any religion.
“The organisation played a great humanitarian role in easing the suffering of the Libyan people during the revolution and the Misrata council urges the security forces to investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice” said the statement, which also called on the authorities to do everything in their power to prevent further such incidents.
The attack, which took place early on Saturday morning, caused extensive damage to the ICRC compound, although none of the seven staff present at the time was harmed. As yet it is not known who was responsible. However it is the fifth attack on the ICRC in the last three months. As a result, the organisation has suspended operations in Misrata and Benghazi, in order to ensure the safety of its staff.
