Tripoli, 25 June:
An armed gang was arrested in Tripoli yesterday by police working together with Supreme Security Committee (SSC).
The group, which . . .[restrict]was based on the outskirts of the capital, was allegedly involved in drug smuggling and the illegal detention of people.
Tripoli police director Mahmoud Sharif confirmed that the raid had taken place on Sunday on premises formally owned by the Qaddafi regime, and that the group was found in possession of illegal drugs.
Sharif added that an investigation into the group was underway, and that those arrested would be referred to the Ministry of Justice to await trial.
It is not known how many members of the gang were arrested.
The authorities in Tripoli have launched a number of raids against the city’s gangs in recent months in a bid to improve law and order. Towards the end of last month, the SSC succeeded in recovering a large quantity of drugs and more than 500,000 dinars in a single operation. [/restrict]
