Benghazi, 17 May:
The director of the Benghazi Medical Centre, Fathi Jehani, has been shot by a four-man armed gang. He . . .[restrict]was wounded in the arm and has been transferred to the local Ibn Sina hospital. His condition is said to be stable. The incident took place yesterday. his assailants are now reported to have been arrested.
Initially it was reported that a member of the Abu Salim Martyrs Brigade had shot him. However, this as since been denied.
It is understood that the Benghazi Local Council was unhappy with his performance and that the council leader, Jamal Ben Noor, had issued a letter dismissing him. A security team was dispatched to instruct him to stand down from his position.
The Libya Herald understands that an argument occurred at the door of the hospital and Jehani allegedly pulled out a gun, which led to his being shot.
Jehani has not confirmed or denied that he brandished a weapon, but maintains that the brigade broke into his office and shot him. He has said that he plans on suing Ben Noor. [/restrict]
