Tripoli, 6 May:

In the five days between 1 May and Saturday evening, some 330,000 Libyans registered to vote for the 19 . . .[restrict]June elections according to an announcement today from the High National Election Commission.

Sources at the HNEC also claimed that today alone, by 1.30pm, a further 200,000 had registered. They told Libya Herald that they expected that by the time registration offices closed at 6pm, Sunday’s tally would be 250,000, making a total of  580,000.

Voter registration continues until, 14 May.  The HNEC has estimated that there are 3.4 million potential voters in Libya and has given itself the target of registering at least two million.

Meanwhile, although there is no official announcement as yet about candidate registration, it is being reported that over 2,000 candidates have so far registered to run for the 200 seats in the constitutional assembly.
