Tripoli, April 4: Two people were slightly injured yesterday afternoon in a shooting incident outside Ajdabiya local council. The shooting occurred . . .[restrict]during a demonstration protesting at the decision last week to select council members rather than hold elections.
Some of the protesters forced their way into the local council’s building and forcing the new members of the council attending an oath-giving ceremony out of the building.
Last Thursday, it was announced that new members of the council had been chosen by a transparency commission headed by Sheikh Al-Shareef Alsharif. The unexpected move was intended to end three weeks of council paralysis following disputes as to who should serve as interim councillors. Last month, however, it was announced that there would be elections “within 45 days” for a new council. Thursday’s decision to select councilors is seen as ensuring that elections do not happen in the near future.
The selection of new members by the transparency commission headed by the sheikh was said at the time to be a compromise following the earlier protests about who should serve.
Protesters are now calling for the transparency commission to be disbanded and elections held as soon as possible.
