Malta, 21 January 2015:
The Libyan government, the only internationally recognised government in Libya, yesterday approved LD 6.5 million of funds to the Water Authority for urgent maintenance work on its infrastructure and three of its water desalination plants.
In the cabinet meeting held in Beida, the Water Authority had requested the LD 8 million that had been approved to it by government decision number (470) of 2014 for an urgent, special budget in order to provide maintenance, materials and electric generators for a number of water desalination plants in Sousa, Tobruk and Butraba.
However, at yesterday’s cabinet meeting only LD 1.3 million was made available, with the condition that the balance of the LD 8 million is made available when the government had more funds.
The Water Authority was also granted LD 5 million for the urgent maintenance of Benghazi’s water infrastructure that suffered damage during the city’s recent fighting.
However, it was decided that this amount was not to be new money, but was to be deducted from LD 100 million that had been previously granted to the Benghazi Crises Committee.
