Tunis, 20 May 2016:

Washington has imposed sanctions on a man it says is a key IS operative in . . .[restrict]Libya as part of what the US Treasury describes as its aggressive action against those who finance, support and arm the terrorists.

The 37 year-old Salmi Salama Salim Sulayman ‘Ammar  is the only one of six terrorists just sanctioned by the US who operates out of Libya.  Also known as “Abu Asra” and “Yusri” Ammar, who may be an Egyptian national, is said by the Americans to have pledged allegiance to ISIL in Syria in late 2014, when he based himself in Libya. He then become involved in providing financial and material support to its operations in the Sinai peninsular.

The US Treasury describes him as one of ISIL’s “critical facilitators” in North Africa, claiming that he helped move hundreds of thousands of dollars, weapons and ammunition to the Sinai.  However, the Americans have given no details of what they believe  to be Ammar’s role with IS in Libya.

The sanctions mean that any property interests that Ammar has within US jurisdiction are frozen and no US citizen is able to have any financial dealings with him. [/restrict]
