The head of security in Ghat, Colonel Murtada, has confirmd that Libyan officials are ready to . . .[restrict]reopen the nearby Libyan-Algerian border post. Shut down in May last year by the Algerians when they closed the entire frontier because of security concerns, it was reported earlier this week that they had now decided to reopen it, but only for Libyans crossing into Algeria. Algerians will still not be allowed to enter Libya.
“We have had a meeting with the Algerians about opening the Tin El Koum border post,” Murtada said. “They have received orders from the president to open it but only to Libyans crossing in vehicles and only after the necessary security arrangements have been made.”
Colonel Fathi Sherif, in charge of the frontier post, added that the e-passport system was not yet available there but that “we will work in the traditional manner, try to overcome the difficulties and to return to work as soon as possible”.
No announcement has been made as yet when the reopening will take place. [/restrict]
