Benghazi’s Crisis Committee has taken steps to bring Libyan and international organisations working in Benghazi together . . .[restrict]under one umbrella.
At a meeting last week with members of the Commission for Relief and other organisations to plan the next phase of relief initiatives for the internally displaced (IDPs) in Benghazi, it was decided to create a database that can be used to coordinate resources.
Currently the crisis committee estimates that some 20,000 families are displaced from their homes in Benghazi. Of those, approximately 5,000 individuals are sheltering in 61 schools in the city. The remainder are staying with relatives or friends, or have left the city temporarily.
The Norwegian Refugee Council and the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre put the number of IDPs from Benghazi at 90,000 individuals.
Because Benghazi’s school are filled with families sheltering in them right now, the Crisis Committee is trying to find alternative solutions to the education needs of the city’s children. Most children in Benghazi have not been to school for the 2014-2015 school year.
The Committee met last week to specifically discuss education issues. Though there are some creative alternatives for students, such as the Benghazi Skype School, the committee hopes to have a clear plan for formal education in the city in the next few weeks. [/restrict]
