Tripoli, 31 March 2015:

The landmark elections held in Libya and Tunisia are likely to form the basis of . . .[restrict]a UN training course in how to get elections right.

The UN Electoral Support Team has gathered sixteen electoral staff from Jordan, Libya and Tunisia in Tunis .

The UN says that the workshop, which started Sunday and will run until Thursday, is part of its continuing efforts  to support national electoral management bodies in the development of technical skills in preparation for elections.

The UN has invited the Independent Election Commission of Jordan, Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC) and Tunisia’s L’Instance Superieure Independante pour les Elections to take part because all three commissions have organised “landmark” elections over the past two years.

Participants have been encouraged to compare experiences and tools in discussion of good practices in credible elections.

“Building a strong community of practice across the region will encourage further exchange on various aspects of elections, strengthening knowledge of participating organisations and their staff in the long term,” said a UN organiser. The Libyan team are being supported by the British foreign office.
