Foreign Minister Mohamed Al-Dairi has claimed there are some 5,000 foreign combatants fighting alongside extremists . . .[restrict]in Libya.
Many terrorist leader in Libya are foreigners. The so-called Emir of the Islamic State in Libya is a Yemeni. One of the men who carried out the bombing in Guba was Saudi, Dairi told AFP this week.
Indeed, Al-Dairi’s number seems low. Many think there are many more foreign fighters here. With Libya’s porous borders, it is not difficult for them to enter, especially in the south from Mali, Nigeria and Niger.
The Guba bombings was the second time IS has used foreign fighters to carry out Libyan suicide attacks in Libya. IS claimed the assault on Tripoli’s Corinthia hotel last month was carried out by a Tunisian and a Sudanese. A video that has recently surfaced showing the two men discussing and planning the attack seems by their accents, to confirm this.
Al-Dairi used repeated the government’s call for the arms embargo to be lifted and for the international community to arm the Libyan National Army. He also warned that terrorism is a growing threat not only to Libya but also to the region and even Europe. [/restrict]
