According to reports from Algeria, an NTC delegation is supposed to have met with Aisha Qaddafi, daughter of the former dictator . . .[restrict]as well as with her brother Mohammed.
The two, along with brother Hannibal, his wife and Qaddafi’s widow Safia fled to Algeria on 29 August last year, a week after the liberation of Tripoli. All have been provided a safe haven by the Algerian government which has rejected demands from the NTC that they be extradited back to Libya.
It is suggested in Algeria that the visit is linked to the upcoming trial of Saif Al-Islam Qaddafi on Libya on murder charges. Last week, Aisha sought to make representations to the International Criminal Court (ICC) on behalf of Saif Al-Islam who was indicted by the ICC on charges of crimes against humanity during last year’s uprising. Aisha wants her brother tried by the ICC — a notion rejected by the NTC.
There has been no independent confirmation of the Algerian reports. Last month, the Algerian press astonished observers with a claim that the NTC had signed a secret agreement with the US to station 12,000 American soldiers in Libya. According to the report, a number of these troops had already arrived from Malta and were now deployed in Benghazi.
If the Algerian report were true and American forces had arrived, they have managed to keep a remarkably low profile so far. [/restrict]
