A group of protesters outside the UN offices in Tripoli on Monday delivered a letter to . . .[restrict]UNSMIL calling for Special Envoy Bernadino Leon to be replaced.
UN spokesman Samir Ghattas confirmed that a small, peaceful protest took place outside the offices of the United Nations Special Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) in the Janzour district on the western outskirts of the capital.
He said a letter was handed to a staff member by protesters, and denied claims made on social media that UNSMIL staff refused to accept the letter.
The contents of the letter have not been made public but reportedly call upon the UN Secretary-General to replace Leon, accusing him of not being neutral.
It is now known who was behind the protests, given that such events in Tripoli are are invariably organised. However, the Tripoli-based administration operating under Omar Al-Hassi has made its dissatisfaction with Leon clear, accusing him of being biased and “disrespecting the laws of the country. It has previously stated that official complaints have been lodged with the UN against Leon. [/restrict]
