The Prime Minister attended a ceremony at Khartoum’s Military Academy yesterday to mark the passing . . .[restrict]out of the latest batch of Libyan army officers being trained by the Sudanese.
The training programme had been agreed by Abdullah Al-Thinni last year when he was Minister of Defence.
In what was one of his last functions during his three-day visit to Sudan, the Prime Minister gave certificates handed to him by Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir to the officers. Accompanied by his ministerial delegation, he also toured an exhibition of Libyan culture and heritage at the academy.
The visit is seen as a major success for Thinni, transforming a fraught relationship into what promises to be a close one.
At the beginning of the visit, the two countries agreed to strengthen military collaboration and training. As part of this, it has now been reported that Sudan has agreed to build camps for the Libyan army. The head of the Sudanese Businessmen Union has been quoted in the Sudanese press saying that a delegation from his union would shortly fly to Libya to sign contracts for prefabricated buildings for the Libyan army.
He also said other issues discussed with the Libya delegation included the reconstruction of schools and homes, and the export of meat to the country. [/restrict]
