Tripoli, 27 July 2014:

The Special Envoys for Libya of the Arab League, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, . . .[restrict]Malta, Spain, the UK and the USA have called for an immediate ceasefire in Libya by all sides. The did so after meeting with the UN in Brussels on 24 July to discuss recent developments in the country.

“The situation in Libya is reaching a critical stage. We are deeply concerned about the ongoing violence across the country and its humanitarian consequences,” the envoys said in a joint statement.

They went on to say that the UN should play a leading role in the ceasefire in cooperation with the Libyan government and other “internal parties”.

In addition, the newly-elected House of Representatives should be given the opportunity to convene according to the time table set up by law, they stated.

Reminding the Libyan government of its responsibility to ensure the safety of the missions of the international community in Libya, they urged international community members to stay fully engaged in the support of Libyan unity, autonomy and stability by assisting the nation throughout the transition.
