By Ashraf Abdul-Wahab.

Tripoli, 27 July 2014:

Members of the new House of Representatives, at an informal meeting yesterday in Tobruk, have said . . .[restrict]that once they are formally in session they will ban all military organisations that are not under the direct control of the government. They said that no “parallel” bodies will be allowed to exist.

This is seen as a reference to organisations such as the Libyan Revolutionaries Operations Room which has been answerable directly to the President of the General National Congress.

The status of the LROR is, in any event, not exactly clear after the demise of Congress, given that it is answerable only to it.

Not all members of the new House were present at the Tobruk meeting but there was said to be representation from across the country at the meeting. There was also, however, a separate meeting of some 50 members in Tripoli yesterday

Those who meet at Tobruk’s Dar Es-Salam Hotel after Taraweeh prayers on Saturday also condemned what they called the “criminal” actions of those involved in killing, destruction and the forced evacuation of people throughout the country at present, saying that they would ensure that those involved would be brought to justice.

They also discussed the handover from Congress to the House and its future venue. The handover would take place in Benghazi at the Tibesti Hotel on 4 August, they said, however subsequent meeting would probably take place in Tobruk.

Given the two separate meetings yesterday, the House appears set to start already divided by location.
