The Canadian government has followed other western countries and international organisations in expressing its . . .[restrict]concern about the political situation in Libya.
Condemning the attacks in Tripoli at the beginning of the week, a spokesman for the Canadian Foreign Ministry called on “all parties to refrain from violence and to work together to de-escalate the situation and engage in a peaceful democratic process”.
In a statement, the Canadian Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and for International Human Rights, Deepak Obhrai, also noted that his country continued “to support a peaceful political transition and encourage efforts to hold a national dialogue. The ongoing constitutional drafting process provides and opportunity for Libyans to peacefully address all problems.
“Canada continues to voice its support for Libya’s political transition. We urge the Libyan government to fulfill its commitment to a peaceful and democratic transition,” he stated.
The United Nations, the European Union, the Arab League, and the United States also made similar statements expressing concern and a commitment to help facilitate a national dialogue this week. [/restrict]
