Benghazi, 13 October 2103:

Two senior officers, both lieutenant colonels, were attacked in separate incidents in Benghazi today. One died, . . .[restrict]the other survived although, according to the spokesman for the city’s Joint Operations Room, he is in a critical condition.

Abdul Fatah Rayani was killed when a gunman shot at him while he was walking in a street in Al Hadaiq district. He was a commander in the Air Defence forces.

Abdulsalam Al-Dus, a commander in the Anti-Drugs Unit, was seriously wounded when a bomb blew up under his car as he was driving to work in the Hadaiq district, near the area known as 602 Buildings. He was rushed to the Benghazi Medical Centre, where one of his legs was amputated.

The reasons for the two attacks are unknown although Dus’ involvement in fighting crime is thought to be linked to his attack.

The number of attacks in Benghazi has risen in recent days. Yesterday, in two separates incidents, a bomb exploded under the car of an imam, Sheikh Abdussalam Al-Hassi, who likewise had to have his leg amputated, and while the home of a commander of the Zawia Martyrs Brigade based in Sirte, Colonel Salah Bu-Hulaiga, was attacked.

Media reports that the Air Force in Benghazi is going on strike to highlight the violence against military personal are, however, untrue according to Air Force sources. [/restrict]
