The General National Congress has vowed it will work to restore sequestered property to its rightful . . .[restrict]owners, but has cautioned that the issue is so complex, it will take time to reverse Qaddafi-era legislation and deal with its effects.
Congress pointed out in a statement today, that the delays so far have had a lot to do with the growth in the sheer number of property claims, along with the pressure to deal with the most pressing cases.
Nevertheless, the statement continued, the GNC had from the start of its work, made it a priority to consider “the grievances of the people whose rights were violated during the former regime”. It pointed out that the GNC had formed committees to respond to grievances and to press on with “this thorny issue and to formulate proposals to address them.”
However the GNC also issued a warning to anyone seeking to capitalise on the whole problem of property title. It called on everyone, including civil society members, to “ play their social role and strive to maintain national unity and social peace. They should close the door on those who seek to exploit this issue by stirring up sedition, in order to destabilise the country’s security.” [/restrict]
