Tripoli, 29 December:
An investigation will be carried out into clashes that took place between members of the police force and the . . .[restrict]Supreme Security Council (SSC) in Tripoli today, Libyan News Agency LANA said today.
The incident occurred after men from a unit of the Rescue Section, part of the National Security Directorate, stopped a patrol vehicle belonging to the SSC to check the contents of his vehicle.
When the police officers found weapons on board, they detained the driver until his unit commander could vouch for him and verify that he was carrying out his orders.
He was taken to the Judicial Police headquarters in Tripoli, and when his patrol commander arrived to confirm that the SSC member had been acting on his orders to transport weapons from one unit to another, the commander himself was detained by the police officer in charge.
It was reported that the incident led to small-scale clashes between members of the SSC and police officers at the station, although no casualties have been reported at the present time.
The situation was eventually resolved, and a committee has been formed to look into the clashes and what caused them, although it is unclear who the investigative body is made up of. [/restrict]
