Tripoli based Libya Prime Minister, Abdel Hamid Aldabaiba, launched Libya’s National Water Security Strategy at an event in Tripoli yesterday.

In his launch speech, Aldabaiba stressed that water security is the basis of sustainable development and ensuring the stability of citizens’ lives, noting that the challenges facing water resources in Libya require immediate and comprehensive treatment. This includes reducing the excessive use of groundwater, combating pollution, and ensuring the equitable distribution of water resources.

Aldabaiba also pointed to the importance of integration between water security and food security, stressing that economic security depends on the preservation and sustainable management of water resources, calling on the concerned authorities to start implementing the strategy immediately to achieve the desired goals by 2030.

The National Water Security Strategy focuses on comprehensive water resource management and sustainability through:

  • Implement sustainable practices for efficient water resource utilization while upgrading and developing infrastructure to ensure reliable supply and management.
  • Enhance the availability of safe drinking water and sanitation for all populations, ensuring equitable access.
  • Safeguard water quality to prevent pollution and promote practices that enhance water conservation and efficiency across sectors.
  • Develop strategies to manage climate change’s impacts on water resources while optimizing the relationship between energy and water in decision-making processes.
  • Educate the public on the importance of water conservation and sustainable practices while building the capacity of water management institutions for effective policy implementation.
  • Foster collaboration on transboundary water issues for responsible regional management and sustainability.
