Tripoli based Libyan Prime Minister, Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba, and his accompanying delegation. held at the European Union headquarters, a meeting with the President of the European Union Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, last Wednesday 15 May.

The meeting was to follow up on several common issues between the EU and Libya, which focused on following up on the issue of irregular migration and cooperation in the fields of renewable energies.

Von der Leyen, the Libyan government reported, welcomed the progress achieved in the field of irregular migration and the development of cooperation between the European Union and Libya in this file. She praised the ‘‘International Conference on Irregular Migration and Border Security’’ scheduled to be held in Tripoli in mid-July with the participation of relevant European Union countries.

Von der Leyen also praised the cooperation between Malta, Italy and Libya in determining energy supply paths aimed at producing alternative energy.

EU should activate southern border control agreement
During the meeting, Aldabaiba stressed that Libya is a transit country, not a source country, and that this is the basis for cooperation on this file, and that it is necessary for the European Union to provide the necessary support and activate the southern border control agreement concluded between the two sides.

Alternative energy
The Prime Minister also stressed the need to increase cooperation between Libya and the European Union in the alternative energy file due to its importance to Libya as well as to the European Union.

The Acting Minister of the Interior, the Head of the Renewable Energy Agency, the Head of the Civil Aviation Authority, the Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, the Libyan Ambassador to the European Union, and the European Union Ambassador to Libya participated in the meeting.
