Zulal Water Technology awarded 900m³ drinking water treatment plant contract by Waha Oil

Zulal Water Technology (ZWT) informed Libya Herald that it has been awarded an Engineering, Procurement, Installation & Commissioning (EPIC) contract by Libya’s Waha Oil Company (WOC). The contract is for a drinking water treatment plant at Dahra Oil Field with design capacity of 900m³/day and operational capacity of 600m³/day.

ZWT said Waha’s Dahra field has been in urgent need for the new water treatment plant, as the field does not currently have a drinking water plant.

A highly specialised project
Moreover, it explained that Dahra Field’s well water is extremely difficult to treat, with high salinity (TDS > 21000ppm) comparable to sea water, despite being in the Sahara Desert. High levels of H2S and iron pose additional challenges and therefore the project is highly specialised and requires substantial technical expertise.

A competitive procurement process
ZWT reports that Waha, one of Libya’s largest oil-producers, undertook a competitive procurement process and detailed technical evaluation before awarding it the contract.

Full turnkey basis
The project is on a full turnkey basis, including pre-treatment, H2S degassing, iron and colloids removal, RO desalination, post-treatment, with HV transformer and dedicated diesel generator, a prefabricated steel building designed and manufactured by REIDsteel (UK), and supply of dosing chemicals from Genesys (UK).

The new plant will be in line with 5 previous RO water plants manufactured by Lenntech, and these EPIC projects were completed on-time by ZWT, for WOC at their Waha field, Gialo field, Essider terminal, and Warehouse in Tripoli.

Iftikhar ul Haq, Director ZWT, who started his career in Libya almost 40 years ago with Ionics at Dahra’s first water plant, said: “The peculiar nature of Dahra well-water makes it difficult to design a suitable plant. However, our previous experience of Dahra, combined with the technical expertise of our engineering team, will enable us to use the latest technologies to provide Waha with an optimal solution for their water needs.”

ZWT stated that its team has 35+ years of unmatched experience of completing over 100 water treatment projects in Libya.
