To address the challenges related to solid waste management, yesterday, the UNDP assisted the Ministry of Local Government in providing garbage collection trucks and backhoe loaders to the municipalities of Murzuq, Bint Beyah, Al Gharifa, Zawiya Al Gharb, Ghadames, Al Mayah, Al Mamoura and Garabulli.

Speaking exclusively to Libya Herald, the Advisor to the Minister of Local Government, Mohamed Abuhelga, said that “Improving services for citizens is one of the most important priorities of the Ministry of Local Government, and we are happy to partner with the UNDP to support the neediest municipalities in Libya to provide better services to residents and raise their resilience”.

Abuhelga affirmed that the Ministry of Local Government provides a good opportunity for international institutions and organizations to cooperate with municipalities through it. This is to cover some basic needs and provide better services to citizens within development programmes. These are drawn and carefully planned by the competent departments in the ministry and with the support of the (Tripoli-based) government and in coordination with local authorities. This applies to the east and south of the country, so that development programmes are distributed fairly to ensure the realization of local development in all Libyan cities simultaneously.

Abuhelga added, “The Ministry of Local Government gives great attention to the most marginalized Libyan cities and regions, and the ones that have the least access to material, and technical support appropriate to their developmental and service situation. Therefore, care has been taken to provide equipment related to solid waste to the cities of Murzuq, Bint Beya, Ghurifa and Ghadames located in the south of the country. Al-Bilad, Al-Qarabuli, Al-Mayah and Al-Mamoura in the west of the country.

Cities and municipalities in the east of the country will have a share in the results of development cooperation between the Ministry of Local Government and international organizations.
