Libya and Niger sign transit road implementation MoU

Under the auspices of Mohamed Bazoum, the Head of State of Niger, and Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba, the Tripoli-based Libyan Prime Minister, Libya and Niger signed an MoU on the start of the construction of the transit trade road between the two neighbouring countries.

The transit route will run from Misrata Free Zone on the coast of Libya, through the Tamanhant Free Zone in southern Libya, near Sebha and on to Agadez in central Niger.

The MoU was signed Wednesday by Libya’s Transport Minister, Mohamed Shahubi and the Minister of Commerce for Niger during the inauguration of the ‘‘Made in Libya’’ Forum and Exhibition held under the slogan ‘‘Niger, the land of promising opportunities and transit trade’’.

The Libyan Transport Ministry says the MoU comes within the framework of activating economic cooperation and supporting investment programmes between the two countries.

They say it aims to implement the opening of a strategic arterial road linking Libya as the gateway to Africa with the countries beyond the Sahara. This, the Ministry adds, constitutes a quantum leap for the economy of the two countries with achievable profits. These include the potential transformation of the region into a centre for trade, the flow of goods and merchandise, and the movement of transit and transport.
