Libya’s Railroad Authority conducted a test run using an old locomotive engine along a 10 km stretch of rail track between Khoms Port and Khoms city main station last Tuesday, a source at the Authority confirmed to Libya Herald.

The test run involved maintaining an old locomotive and the rail line and replacing several rail tracks in it that had been stolen since the 2011 revolution. The whole process was conducted using only Libyan technicians. The track also needed clearing from debris and shrubs and trees that had grown over the decade.

Libya’s rail construction frozen since 2011
The construction of Libya’s railway system, contracted with Russian and Chinese firms, had been halted by the country’s 2011 revolution. There have been many attempts and announcements to revive construction, but the country’s lack of security means no foreign contractors are ready to return.
