London, 9 April 2021:

A shipment of 57,600 doses of AstraZeneca anti-Coronavirus vaccines arrived at Tripoli’s Mitiga airport last night.

This follows the arrival in Tripoli of the first ever batch on 4 April consisting of 101,252 doses of Sputnik V vaccines that had arrived from the UAE.

The latest shipment had arrived through the COVAX process. COVAX is a global initiative, co-led by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), working in partnership with UNICEF as well as the World Bank, civil society organizations and manufacturers.

Speaking to Libyan media on the arrival of the latest batch of vaccines, Health Minister Ali Zanati reiterated that 12 million doses of vaccine are expected to arrive in Libya.

He said that he expected the public to start receiving their vaccines by the middle or the end of next week. Zanati also reiterated that all people present in Libya, legally or illegally, will receive the vaccine.

Religious authorities approve receiving vaccines while fasting

Meanwhile, the religious authorities in Libya have declared that receiving vaccines while fasting does not void fasting, encouraging people to come forward for their vaccines during the holy fasting month which starts Monday or Tuesday, depending on the sighting of the start of the new lunar month.
