The High National Election Commission (HNEC) has ratified the results of last month’s election, according to its . . .[restrict]leader, Nuri Elabbar.
It was initially reported that 28 appeals were filed against the results. However, Elabbar told told a meeting attended by leading diplomats: “The number of appeal cases before the district courts has reached 37, five of which did not meet the complaint criteria. One appeal was accepted, and the candidate’s [sic] name was removed from the list.”
It is understood that the upheld appeal was against Muhamad Idris, but it has since been overturned in court and Idris has been reinstated.
The HNEC re-counted the votes in two electoral centres and, according to Elabbar, found no breaches nor violations. Powers are expected to pass from the National Transitional Council to the National Congress on 8 August, after which the members of congress (MCs) will elect a government. [/restrict]
