Benghazi/Cairo, 1 September 2017:

A Ukrainian doctor who has worked at the hospital in Hun for eight years went on hunger strike this week after the authorities failed to transfer in full money she was owed to her bank back home.

Dr Larisa Gridin camped outside the hospital administration on strike after only LD 6,000 instead of LD 60,000 she was owed was transferred to Ukraine. She reportedly took the action after both the hospital and the bank failed to act on her complaints.

Following accusations blaming it, the hospital issued a statement claiming it was the bank’s mistake, not its own. It was, however, now trying to put matters right. Residents in Hun, however, say that the hospital responded only after the doctor went on strike.

She has now ended it, having been assured that the mistake would be corrected. The Jumhuriya Bank has apparently written to the Central Bank to have the rest of the money transferred.

The member of the House of Representatives for Hun, Ismail Alshareef, told the Libya Herald that local people fully supported her action.

“She has served the patients there, and all the people are standing with her,” he said.

Despite the Eid holiday, he would be going to visit her tomorrow, Saturday, to assure her that matters would be fully resolved.
