A large crowd of demonstrators in Benghazi on Saturday, led by local militia forces, demolished the massive statue of Qaddafi’s political . . .[restrict]hero, former Egyptian president Gamal Abdel-Nasser.
Th statue was in Gamal Abdel-Nasser Street. It has now reverted to its pre-Qaddafi era name, Shara Istiklal (Independence Street).
There had been calls over the past year for the street, one of Benghazi’s main thoroughfares, to go back to its former name.
There was general approval for the demolition and name change. “We didn’t like it as Abdel-Nasser Street,” said Benghazi businessman Abdulrazak Mukhtar. “This should have happened months ago.” [/restrict]
