Tripoli, 16 February  2017:

The attorney-general’s office has demanded the release of a Tripoli doctor kidnapped twelve days ago.

Dr  Abu Ghanem Baruni, who runs the city’s Masara clinic, was seized by unidentified gunmen 12 kilometres west of the capital on 4 February in a spate of abductions for which Tripoli has become notorious.

The appeal from the attorney-general’s office is unusual. Its statement said that it was acting on a request made by Baruni’s son Walid. It warned that unless the kidnappers complied they would face the full force of the law. It has been suggested that investigators have identified the criminals and are threatening them directly.

The majority of kidnappings in Tripoli is carried out for ransom. The authorities, led by Abdul Raouf Kara’s Rada (Special Deterrence) Force, have had only limited success in catching the gangs and freeing victims.
