Tunis, 16 February 2017:
In a potentially inflammatory manoeuvre, Presidency Council deputy Ahmed Maetig met boycotting members of the House of Representatives (HoR) from the south this morning.
The boycotters pressed Maetig to give greater support to Fezzan.
The PC deputy said it was important they worked together to achieve some form of development that could sustain the entire region. He said that both the PC and the MPs needed to cooperate with municipal councils to restart stalled projects in the south.
Last month, the Fezzan members complained there was a complete lack of interest in the south as power outages left some areas without electricity for two weeks. One often cited problem is the failure to finish the Obari power station and an oil refinery nearby, described as obvious remedies to problems in the region.
Today Maetig insisted the PC was as concerned as anyone about the Fezzan and would work to counter the problems facing the region. However, despite these comments, he added the PC was still awaiting proposals from municipalities.
