The Governor of the Central Bank of Libya (CBL), Naji Issa, met last Wednesday (16 September), at the UK Foreign Office headquarters in London, with the Ministry’s Chief Economic Adviser, Professor Deniz Igan.

The meeting was attended by the Director of the Middle East and North Africa Department and his team, alongside the team accompanying the Governor.

The meeting addressed key economic and financial developments in Libya, macroeconomic updates, and current challenges, as well as an exchange of views on various economic and financial issues of mutual interest.

The Governor also outlined the CBL’s efforts to develop the banking sector, enhance its efficiency, promote financial inclusion, ensure monetary and financial stability, and bolster the national economy's resilience in the face of local and international challenges and variables.

Discussions also covered the CLB’s efforts to unify public spending, improve anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CFT) measures, strengthen compliance, governance, and oversight systems within the banking sector, and foster cooperation with relevant national and international bodies. These efforts aim to enhance the integrity and transparency of Libya’s financial and banking system and align it with relevant international standards and practices.

Both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation and exchanging expertise and insights across economic, financial, and banking sectors, as well as leveraging international experience to support reform and development programs.

The CBL said this meeting is part of its ongoing efforts to enhance communication channels and cooperation with international partners.

It will be recalled that Governor Issa had also met with the Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey at his office in London last Wednesday.
