On the sidelines of Libya’s participation in the 22nd Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) 2026 in Kuala Lumpur (23-25 September), Essam Al-Awl, Head of the General Authority for Exhibitions and Conferences, met with Norshahrin bin Hamidun, Head of the Malaysian Chamber of Commerce. The meeting was attended by the Head of the Tripoli Chamber of Commerce, as well as a representative from the Libyan Embassy in Malaysia.
The meeting addressed ways to strengthen economic and trade relations between Libya and Malaysia and to open new avenues for cooperation between private sector institutions and the business communities of both nations. Discussions also covered partnership opportunities in the fields of exhibitions, conferences, investment, and trade exchange.
Al-Awl explained that the Tripoli based Ministry of Economy and Trade is working to facilitate the movement of businesspeople, investors, and traders between the two countries. He noted that, based on the principle of reciprocity, Malaysian citizens have been exempted from visa requirements; this measure aims to streamline entry procedures into Libya, foster direct communication among businesspeople, and create a more favourable environment for expanding economic and trade ties.
The Head of the Authority emphasized that this step aligns with the Tripoli government’s strategy to expand international economic partnerships and remove barriers to the movement of businesspeople, thereby supporting investment and trade opportunities and enhancing the presence of Malaysian companies in the Libyan market.
Agreement to organize an exhibition of Malaysian products in Libya
The meeting also resulted in an agreement to organize an exhibition of Malaysian products in Libya. This initiative will provide Malaysian companies and institutions with the opportunity to showcase their products and capabilities to the Libyan market, while paving the way for new trade and investment partnerships between the private sectors of both nations.
Invitation to participate in Tripoli International Fair 2027
In this context, Al-Awl extended a formal invitation to the head of the Malaysian Chamber of Commerce, urging active participation by Malaysian companies in the upcoming edition of the Tripoli International Fair. He emphasized the significance of a Malaysian presence at this international event and the opportunities it offers for direct engagement with Libyan and international companies, investors, and economic entities.
For his part, the head of the Malaysian Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Norshahrin bin Hamidun, welcomed the invitation and expressed his readiness to accept it. He confirmed that Malaysian companies would participate in the upcoming Tripoli International Fair, reflecting the shared desire to strengthen economic and trade relations between the two countries.
The General Authority for Exhibitions and Conferences said this meeting aligns with its efforts to enhance Libya’s international presence and to leverage exhibitions and economic forums as effective platforms for opening markets, attracting investment, and building sustainable economic and trade partnerships with various nations.
