The National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) reported yesterday that it held a scientific symposium, on the same day, jointly organized with the Ministry of Defence, represented by the Libya Centre for Strategic Studies and Research at the NESDB’s Tripoli headquarters.
The symposium focused on discussing the phenomenon of illegal migration and the resultant risks of settlement in Libya. The event was attended by several specialists and stakeholders from relevant organizations.
The symposium was opened by Dr. Mahmoud Al-Futaisi, Director General of the NESDB, who emphasized in his opening remarks the importance of this event, given the direct link between illegal migration and the economic, social, and health conditions the country is experiencing.
He also stressed the need to strengthen coordination among relevant authorities and to develop national policies related to managing this vital issue. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of actively engaging in regional and international cooperation initiatives in a way that preserves national sovereignty and does not compromise it.
The symposium included several presentations addressing the following topics:
1. Illegal Migration: Concept, Causes, and Effects
2. A presentation of the key findings of the study on the phenomenon of illegal migration.
3. Settlement in Libya and its impact on national security.
4. National and international efforts to reduce illegal migration.
The symposium concluded with a set of recommendations, which will be formulated into a matrix of government procedures and interventions, to be submitted to the Cabinet for implementation.
This aims to address this phenomenon and mitigate its negative effects on the state and society.
