Military operations launched in Zawia and surrounding areas ostensibly to fight crime – and possibly militias too

The Tripoli based Western Coast Military Zone, part of the Libyan Army (Logo: Western Coast Military Zone).

‎The West Coast Military Region announced yesterday that it had launched military operations, on the same day, in the city of Zuwara.

The military operations come as part of the decisive efforts to root out organised crime hideouts and confront outlaws, and comes‎ within the framework of completing the military operation launched by the West Coast Military Region in early January in the cities of Zawia and Al-Ajelat.

‎A direct threat to national security and sovereignty
The West Coast Military Region said its 105th Battalion and the 62nd Brigade launched intensive raids, targeting organised criminal gangs engaged in illegal fuel smuggling, human trafficking and illegal immigration, which pose a direct threat to national security and sovereignty.‎

‎Criminal activities impeding stability and development
The West Coast Military Region confirmed the continuation of its operations strongly and firmly until the complete elimination of crime hotspots, and the cleansing of the area of all criminal activities that impede stability and development efforts, as part of the implementation of the strict instructions of the Supreme Military Command on the need to impose security and law enforcement in all targeted areas.‎

‎It stressed that these operations would continue until smuggling networks and organised crime are completely eradicated, and the authority and prestige of the state is re-established.‎
